Wanderburg Beginner Guide
Wanderburg beginner guide: core loop, castle controls, first-hour checklist, between-run unlocks, and FAQ for the Steam demo and Early Access.
Tactics below lean on Steam About text plus demo-era tip articles. After Early Access patches, prefer fresh Steam news / Discord notes over undated blogs.
What you do each run
Wanderburg is a minimalist medieval roguelike where you drive a castle on wheels. Castles hunt, villages flee, and only the biggest stronghold survives.
Steam’s loop in one line: roll forward, consume settlements and smaller fortresses, expand the fortress with modular siege gear, and break runs with wild build experiments.
Your castle does not only upgrade stats — defeating powerful enemy castles is the main moment it physically grows.
If you only want the vibe first, watch the official reveal trailer or skim Gameplay, then come back for the checklist.
Controls and movement
Steam lists full support for mouse, keyboard, or controller.
Published hands-on pieces (GameStar, Bullet Haven) highlight inertia, drifting, and short nitro-style boosts — movement matters as much as firepower.
Practical habit: circle enemy fortresses so your frontal maw keeps eating while turrets keep shooting. Straight-line charging is easier to surround.
For handheld questions see Steam Deck notes on this wiki — official Deck Verified status was not confirmed in our research pass.
First-hour checklist
1) Install the free Demo (or EA after Sep 8, 2026) and finish two short runs that only practice drifting and not dying to swarms.
2) When upgrades appear, prioritize sustain — demo tip pages (Bullet Haven; German tip write-ups) recommend Carpenter / Zimmermann-style healing early.
3) Focus boss fortresses when you can; published guides note toppling rival castles grows the fortress more than endless tiny grinds.
4) After you can live a few minutes, layer area-clear (community guides often favor on-hit explosion procs) before greedily stacking single-target only.
5) Between runs, unlock modules / vehicles / artifacts / captains that reinforce what already worked — Steam describes that meta layer explicitly.
6) Then open Tips and Best Build on this wiki; skip cheat / item-ID sites.
Between runs
Steam describes modular progression: expand the moving fortress with new siege modules and structures, while unlockable vehicles, artifacts, and captains widen strategies.
Treat Early Access balance as fluid. Prefer evergreen advice (survive longer, grow via bosses, unlock variety) over patch-specific numbers until the meta stabilizes.
